Proper networking is essential to a successful career campaign. Networking is a skill and knowing how to network in the context of your job search will make your search easier and more rewarding. As with all skills, networking is one that seems simple on the surface but requires planning, proper execution, proper technique.
Networking is more than meeting new people, it is about building a trusting relationship that is mutually beneficial to all parties. Are you able to build trusting relationships, prepared to offer assistance and skilled in asking for help?
Can you answer the following questions:
Where are the best venues to network?
Whom should I meet at these networking events?
Do I attend events or meet new people with the goal of finding a job?
I met five new people last night, who is a high-value contact?
Knowing the correct answers to these questions will show that your networking skills are solid and that your job/career goals can be met in a relatively short period. If you can't answer the questions your next job will take quite a while to find.
Measuring your networking skills is a pretty straight forward process, look at the results. Have you been introduced to any high-value contacts? Have you met at least three new high-value contacts a week? If the answer is no, your networking skills need sharpening.
